Alternatives to a Traditional Wedding Cake

Every detail of your wedding day is important - especially the cake! Typically one of the last events of the night and one of the last things your guests will eat at your wedding, you want it to be memorable! While cake is traditional (and there’s nothing wrong with that), bakeries are going out of their way to create more extravagant and creative dessert options for brides. If you are up for choosing a sweet bite other than cake, or perhaps in addition to cake, check out our suggestions!

Cupcakes

Cupcakes are a great idea if you want something different, but are not ready to abandon the cake idea altogether. You could even keep the cake cutting tradition by cutting a cupcake and feeding it to each other, or asking for a small 6” tier to top your cupcake stand. Cupcakes are obviously individually wrapped, which means they are easy to walk around with and you can choose several flavors. Keep in mind though, your guests may choose to have more than one. Talk to your baker about your guest count and ask for their suggestions in making sure there is enough for everyone! Cupcakes are a superb option if you or a guest has a dietary restriction. Simply ask your baker to make a dozen or vegan, gluten free, etc. The rest of your guests can enjoy traditional cupcakes, while those with special diets don’t miss out. Cupcakes are also easy to transport and set up — making them perfect if you or a family member are picking it up yourself.

Cheesecake Bites

Cheesecakes bites are perfect for any type of wedding because they come in so many varieties. You can pick one that matches your favorite flavor or color scheme and customize it with fresh fruit toppings or other decorations. Like cupcakes or any other bite sized option, you can choose different flavors and cater to different dietary restrictions.

Mini Pies

A pie bar is similar to a cupcake bar in that it offers guests several options when it comes time for dessert. They're easy to serve, even if you have a large group of guests, and they're another fun way to allow everyone to try different flavors. How perfect would pumpkin, apple, and pecan mini pies be at a Fall wedding?

Donuts

Another classic dessert that everyone loves, yet it’s not cake! Ask your baker to glaze your donuts with a glaze that matches your color scheme and top them with you and your groom’s favorite candy. Use a chalkboard from our Inventory Closet and label “His Favorite” and “Her Favorite” near the corresponding tower. Again, a great option for those with dietary restrictions.

Ice Cream Bar

An interactive option that provides another something for your guests to do! If you load up the bar with sauces and topping options, guests can choose exactly what they want to eat! Set up individual dishes or purchase individual cups of ice cream so guests can serve themselves. How refreshing during a Summer wedding!

Ice Cream Cake

Ice cream cakes are one of the hottest trends we've seen in the wedding industry over the last few years, and for good reason: They're easy to make, customizable, and relatively affordable. Plus, they taste amazing! These whimsical desserts are made with several layers of ice cream and toppings — think whipped cream, fresh fruit, and chocolate sauce — stacked on top of each other and decorated with frosting. They can be served in slices or as a whole cake, and they're great for either small or large weddings. This option gives you a more traditional look of cake, but will have your guests surprised when and your groom you cut into it.

Cookies

Cookies are a classic, and sure to be liked by every guest! Take it up a notch and set up a cookie station where guests can pick their own flavors or even design their own custom cookies using different frosting flavors and sprinkles. Imagine how festive this would be at a December wedding!

Candy Pyramid

The candy pyramid is a display of colorful candies that can be customized to match your wedding colors. Candy towers are an easy way to showcase your favorite candies in an impressive display, whether you choose truffles or gourmet marshmallows. How appropriate to have a candy pyramid at a Fall wedding close to Halloween?

Dessert Table

A dessert table is an elegant way to display all kinds of sweet treats. You can have a lovely array of sweets, including cake pops, cookies, cupcakes, and more. The idea behind a dessert table is to have a variety of sweet treats to enjoy during the reception. A dessert table gives your guests plenty of choices so they can pick exactly what they want without having to worry about whether or not there will be room for seconds or even thirds!

Macaron Tower

The macaron tower makes a beautiful centerpiece at any event, and it's an easy way to incorporate all of your favorite flavors into one dessert display. Macarons come in many different flavors so you can be sure there'll be something that fits with your theme and taste preferences. If you're going for an elegant look, choose soft colors like white or ivory with simple flavors like vanilla or chocolate ganache. Or if you want something more colorful and playful, go for pastel colors like pink or blue with fruity flavors like mango or strawberry champagne. Match the colors with the season you plan to be married in!

Croquembouche Tower

A traditional French puff pastry, croquembouche makes for a beautiful display and tastes amazing, too. Often decorated with spun sugar or chocolate, the display is piled high and adds a touch of class and style to your wedding day. A true showstopper that your photographer won’t be able to get enough of!
