OUR INSPIRATION TO GIVE BACK
Spc Lunsford Bernard Brown II was kind, funny and creative. Affectionately called “Deucy” by his family, he was loved by many. As a high school football player, his heart, work ethic and determination helped his team win the state championship. Spc Brown had a love for service and attended college on a JROTC scholarship. He later enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany. On September 20, 2003, a mortar shell hit Brown’s battalion outside of an Abu Ghraib prison, near Baghdad. By chance, Brown absorbed a majority of the shrapnel and inherently saved the lives of 11 other soldiers. In recognition of Lunsford’s service, the United States Military awarded him the Purple Heart Medal. He was 27 years old. He left behind his wife and 3-month-old daughter he never got the chance to hold. As well as his mother, father, sister, brother, extended family and an entire community that mourned his passing.
Memorial Day has always been a day of gratitude, respect and honor in our family. Now, it’s more real how many have given their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we have. Despite the overwhelming loss our family has endured, we are so very grateful for opportunities to show honor and respect to current and former military servicemen and women. This year marks 20 years that Lunsford made the ultimate sacrifice. We are fortunate to extend love, service and kindness to a deserving military couple, in his honor.
