Start early

Don't wait until the last minute to start writing your vows. Give yourself plenty of time to reflect on your relationship, your future spouse, and what you want to say.

Start brainstorming ideas and jot down notes and phrases as they come to you. We suggest keeping notes in your phone.

Consider the tone

Think about what kind of tone you want to set in your vows. Do you want them to be serious, romantic, light-hearted, humorous, or a combination of both? Your vows should reflect your personality and the tone of your relationship.

Be honest

Your vows should 100% come from the heart. Be honest about your feelings and your promises to your partner. Don't feel like you need to use grand gestures or elaborate language if that’s not how you usually talk. Simple, truthful words can be just as powerful. Authenticity speaks volumes!

Keep it concise

Don’t pressure yourself to write a novel. While you want your vows to be meaningful, you also don't want them to be too long. Keep them concise and to the point, so that your guests don't lose interest. Plus, the longer the vows, the more you have to speak! Aim for 1-2 minutes each.

Practice, practice, practice

Once you've written your vows, practice saying them out loud. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident on your wedding day. It’s not a foreign concept: practice makes perfect! You can also practice with your partner or a close friend to get feedback and to work on speaking in front of others. If you practice enough, by your wedding day you will have all buy memorized them!

Be respectful

Remember that your vows are being exchanged in front of your family and friends. While you want to express your love and commitment to your partner, be respectful and avoid any inappropriate or offensive language. Also keep in mind that children (may) by in attendance. While vows are extremely intimate, in this case, they are not being kept private!

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you're struggling to write your vows, don't be afraid to ask for help. You can ask a close friend or family member for advice or do research and find examples of vows you like. While we don’t suggest copying them verbatim, you may find a few words or phrases to help you get the ball rolling.

In the end, your wedding vows are a personal expression of your love and commitment to each other. With these tips, you can create meaningful and heartfelt vows that will be cherished and honored for years the entirety of your marriage.
